The following are excerpts from the Community Forum held today, July 1, in the Cafeteria:Richard Koshalek introduced the meeting by explaining that the purpose of today’s forum was to focus on education. Richard then referenced the commitment of the Board of Trustees to respond to the issues presented by the students, and announced that alum Tim Kobe, who is also on the board, will now be the head of the Education Committee. Richard on his Tenure

June 17th, 2008 Community Forum Moderator

The following question was submitted at the Community Forum held on June 10th. Richard’s response is below.Question: “Mr. Koshalek, can you explain why you need five more years to finish your job?”Richard’s response: “In addition to continuing to address all aspects of the educational experience at Art Center, perhaps my most important reason for staying at Art Center is one common to all presidents of top schools: to continue the multi-focus fundraising efforts that I’ve successfully conducted since my arrival.  These efforts have tripled the College’s scholarship funds and already exceed all fundraising conducted in the 70 years before my tenure.   As well as continuing to build scholarship funds, I am deeply committed to securing support for the most advanced and sustainable facilities and technology improvements campus-wide.”

Frank Gehry

The College has selected Frank Gehry to design the DRC because of his extraordinary vision and ability to design a space that will inspire the Art Center community for generations to come. His use of innovative building materials and emerging technologies reflect the goals of the DRC as a learning space for the future. Furthermore, the DRC will continue Art Center’s tradition of architectural excellence. We believe in using architects in all stages of their career. Daly Genik, architects of South Campus—previously unknown in the architecture world—are now building at Harvard. Hodgetts + Fung worked with students to design the Sinclaire Pavilion and have since gone on to redesign the shell at Hollywood Bowl. The main building at Hillside Campus, designed by Craig Ellwood Associates, was not without its share of controversy when it was first established and is now a city historical landmark.

DRC

June 16th, 2008 Community Forum Moderator

Just as the art and design fields have evolved in response to changes in technology and the professional work environment, so must the nature of art and design education. The Design Research Complex (DRC) will provide Art Center students with a learning environment that addresses the future of design education and is relevant to student needs. It will include advanced prototyping studios, a new, expanded library emphasizing digital media, and flexible learning spaces that can better accommodate transdisciplinary learning. The DRC will also serve as a beta test site for the most current software and technologies provided by companies like Autodesk, Cisco, Dessault and more. Sustainable features will be included throughout the complex, including building materials and technologies.
