Art Center’s Graduate Art Department will host an international conference, Everything Is In Everything, on the work of Jacques Rancière March 11 and 12. The theme will focus on “aesthetic education,” a philosophical and political program first proposed by Friedrich Schiller in the last decade of the 18th century and the subject of Rancière’s recent innovative work on the relation between aesthetics and politics.
From his earliest work, the theme of education has been at the center of Rancière’s concerns. The questions forming the horizon of this conference are: What would it mean to propose a new “aesthetic education” of humanity today? How would the resurrection of this concept transform the current concepts of art, politics and pedagogy? To what extent is it necessary to return to the founding moments of aesthetic theory to re-articulate the relation between art and politics today?
Held at Art Center’s South Campus, the conference will bring together senior and junior scholars as well as internationally acclaimed artists working in the field of contemporary political and aesthetic theory.
The conference is free and open to the public, but RSVPs are required. For more information, including the conference schedule and list of participants, please visit artcenter.edu/gradart/conference.

Steve Gavenas had already earned numerous degrees, and enjoyed a successful career, before coming to Art Center to pursue his master’s in Graduate Art.
“I was looking for a world-class fine art graduate program that would challenge me and help me grow in my technical capability as well as the theoretical underpinning of my work, expand my artistic vision, and allow me to join the vibrant Los Angeles art scene,” explains Gavenas. “I also wanted a school that takes education seriously, with intensive faculty involvement and great classes—not just a residency program like some schools.”

Dubbed “the event with the intimidating title” by its organizers, the first annual 4 Hours Solid took place on April 21 at Art Center’s South Campus and marked the first time the College specifically showcased work and ideas from its four graduate programs—Graduate Art, Broadcast Cinema, Industrial Design (GradID) and Media Design (MDP).
Over 300 people attended the evening event, which included a panel discussion, exhibitions of recent student theses and work, student film screenings and a reception.
For the students showing their work, the evening provided a welcome opportunity to get feedback on their projects.
MDP student Haemi Yoon, who presented her thesis project that explores the down-time of everyday electronic objects, said she was surprised by the questions visitors asked her. “I thought people wouldn’t understand the project, but they totally got it,” said Yoon. “People asked me, ‘What do you think a future object will look like?’ and ‘Do you think these objects should have personalities?’ It was a great dialogue.” (more…)
