Young Love: Honoring Doyald Young’s Legacy

Doyald Young was one of Art Center’s toughest—but most beloved—instructors, one the greatest letterform designers of all time, and a cherished friend and mentor to many.

Celebrate his life and legacy with us this Sunday, April 10, at Young Love, a day of workshops held in his honor and an evening of memories and stories.

To celebrate Young’s work, prominent designers and Art Center instructors will help you learn to draw beautiful curves and letterforms. Join Jill Belle, Stefan G. Bucher, Nils Lindstrom, Ramone Munoz, Chesley Nassaney and Bumsuk Lim for a series of hands-on workshops creating luscious curves in homage to Young. Workshops will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and held in the cafeteria and nearby classrooms. Visit www.35k.com/younglove/workshops.gif for updates to the workshop schedule later in the week.

Then, in the evening, join friends and colleagues of Young for an exhibition of the day’s work and a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. Following the reception will be a screening of the new documentary, Doyald Young, Type Designer directed by Scott Erickson and produced by Lynda.com. Following the documentary, Young’s friends and colleagues will share a few of their favorite memories of this great man.

OutNetwork Presents Mapping at Brewery Annex

OutNetwork, Art Center’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning, Intersex and Allies (GLBTQIA) student club, will exhibit the work of a dozen artists and designers the L.A. Artcore Brewery Annex in downtown Los Angeles throughout March. The exhibit, Mapping, examines the GLBTQIA community and their location geographically, politically, internationally and locally.

Mapping is an extension of the mission of OutNetwork, which not only supports and embraces a variety of individuals from every socio-economic background, but also provides opportunities for networking and advancement for its members.

An opening reception will be this Sunday, March 6, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Brewery. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Doyald Young, 1926-2011

It is with deep sadness that we report of the passing of Doyald Young, beloved teacher, lettering and logotype designer, friend and mentor. Young passed away yesterday due to complications following a recent heart operation. He graduated from Art Center with a degree in Advertising in 1955.

“Doyald was a gifted artist, an astonishingly powerful teacher and well-deserving of the many accolades he received during his illustrious career,” said Art Center President Lorne Buchman. “We honored Doyald at Art Center last December with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and we bestowed upon him an honorary doctorate of humane letters. The double entendre was not lost on the Art Center community.

“Indeed, Doyald, the great human being and the brilliant artist,  infused in every exquisite font and letterform he created his immense and passionate humanity. We deeply mourn the passing of our dear and wonderful friend.”

There is a memorial planned for April 10 — Young Love, a Day of Drawing Beautiful Curves in Memory of Doyald Young. Details forthcoming.

Focus Screening Saturday

Mike Ross

Broadcast Cinema student, filmmaker Steve Hwang, is bringing an interesting topic to the big screen: a feature-length documentary on professional gamer Mike Ross.

For Focus, Hwang followed Ross throughout 2010 as he travelled the country, competing in Street Fighter 4 contests and preparing for the big tournament.

The film premieres tomorrow evening at Hillside Campus. Admission is free, and you can RSVP here. Check out the trailer below.

Running to Celebrate Life

We checked in with Product Design alumna and faculty member Wendee Lee to see how the Rose Bowl 5K went earlier this month.

Lee ran the race to celebrate and honor the memory of fellow alumnus and faculty member Norm Schureman.

“The race was fantastic,” Lee says. “It was sunny and warm—perfect running weather. I had planned out my race tempo and while it was my slowest 5K, it was definitely the strongest and most enjoyable one I’ve run. I finished right at my target finish time, feeling no pain.”

Lee asked supporters to donate to Schureman’s Memorial Scholarship fund as a way to both celebrate his life, and help ensure that his legacy continues. It’s not too late to donate to the scholarship.

“The Norm Schureman Memorial scholarship is particularly important to me as a Product Design alum and faculty member,” Lee explains. “I had Norm as an instructor, and was lucky enough to have him as a colleague as well. It means so much to know this scholarship will help future Product Design students.”

New Google Projects by MDP Grads

We’ve told you about the Google 5—and we have an update on what our Graduate Media Design alums have been up to over at Google Labs.

Today, Chris Lauritzen and team launched “Map Your Valentine,” which lets you use Google Maps to share a special place with a special someone. It’s been very well received—and it’s not too late to send your special someone one of these customized valentines.

Also today, Jonathan Jarvis and team launched Adroidify, a fun Android mobile application that lets you create custom versions of the Android mascot. Jarvis served as creative lead on the project, and it’s already a huge success.

Alumnus Creating New Work for Metro Station


Fine Art alumnus and Art Center at Night/Saturday High faculty member Ronald J. Llanos has been hard at work the past three years creating Ephemeral Views: A Visual Essay, for Metro’s Expo/Western Station constructed at Western Avenue in Los Angeles. He is creating 24 mosaic panels (each 8’ x 3’) that comprise the work under construction.

The Source brings us an update on the progress. From the article: “Ronald’s watercolor paintings have a fresh, spontaneous quality to them. The task of translating his translucent washes of color into a hard, permanent material was a challenge. Artisans at Mosaika Art & Design traced Ronald’s designs onto ceramic tile and added thin layers of glaze to preserve the feel of the artist’s hand in the work. Next the work was fired, cut into small pieces and placed within the panels.”

Broadcast Cinema Alum and Faculty Member Inks Deal

Art Center Broadcast Cinema alumnus and faculty member Nir Bashan has just signed a deal to adapt a bestselling book, Three Dog Nightmare, into a feature film screenplay. He is co-writing the screenplay with Chuck Negron, lead singer of the band Three Dog Night.

The book is about the rise and fall, and eventual rise again, of Chuck Negron of the band Three Dog Night. It’s an inspirational story of overcoming addiction and adversity against all odds. Work began in December in Los Angeles, and is expected to be competed in early summer.

Bashan is an Emmy-nominated, Clio-winning director who directs and writes commercials, features and television. He currently teaches in both the Broadcast Cinema and Advertising departments.

He has won, or been nominated for, more than 30 awards worldwide for his short films and commercials, such as a nomination for the Cannes Film Festival Young Director Award and a win for the Best New Director award at the DGA in New York City. He has worked with clients including Honda, AT&T and Coca Cola.
