Meet Jennifer Golub of Let There Be Dragons Today

Don’t miss your chance to meet Jennifer Golub, Executive Director of Content at Let There Be Dragons today at 1:00 p.m. in the Boardroom as part of the Office of Career Development’s Career Chats series.

What exactly is Let There Be Dragons? In case you haven’t seen the pink posters scattered across campus, here’s how the creative firm describes itself:

“Let There Be Dragons is a new content dream machine. The name Let There Be Dragons comes from 16th century cartography — unknown areas and uncharted waters were labeled with the phrase, ‘There Be Dragons.’ We say, ‘Bring it.’ LTBD embraces the unknown and uses it to craft new ways to tell brand stories and connect with new audiences. Led by creative thinkers and craftspeople, we bring new content and forms of creativity to the world from new games, apps, films, shows, books, memes and more.”

Organized by the Office of Career Development, Career Chats: Insights into Creative Professions (formerly the Business Dialogue Series) provide Art Center students with an exclusive opportunity to meet industry leaders in a variety of fields. At these informal presentations, students can identify potential job markets, gain insight into specific fields and solicit career advice from visiting guests, all in the intimate setting of Art Center’s Boardroom. Career Chats take place Tuesdays, 1–2 p.m. during Weeks 3–7 of every term.

Don’t Miss Machine Project’s Mark Allen Tonight

Tonight, Art Center’s Office of Career Development and Fine Art Department are presenting students with a unique opportunity to meet Mark Allen, the founder and executive director of Machine Project, from 7-9 p.m. in the Boardroom at Hillside Campus.

A non-profit performance and installation space that investigates art, technology, science and more, the Echo Park-based Machine Project also operates as a loose confederacy of artists producing shows at locations ranging from beaches to museums.

Tonight, Allen will discuss Machine Project’s history, fantastical events and mysterious collaborators. Topics covered will include indoor shipwrecks, dog operas (opera for and by dogs),fire starting with sticks, houseplant vacations, and teaching children how to steal cars.

No RSVP is required.

Best Practices and the Business of Art

Don’t miss this lecture presented by the Office of Career Development and Fine Art Department on best practices and the business of fine art. Speaker Karen Atkinson will discuss exhibition strategies, ethics, finding a job, preparing portfolios, pricing and selling work and finances for artists.

Atkinson is a media, installation and public artist, an independent curator and collaborator. She has published and guest edited a number of publications.

Creator of the GYST software for artists, in 2000 she founded GYST as an artist-run professional practices service company. Currently, she focuses on making life better for artists and less on exhibiting her own work.

Business Dialogue Series Kicks Off Tuesday

The Summer Term Business Dialogue Series kicks off tomorrow. Presented by Art Center’s Art Center’s Office of Career Development, the hour-long presentations introduce students to the diversity of opportunities available in the fields of art and design.

Each term, leaders of design firms and studios come to campus to create awareness of their businesses, showcase their work and engage in conversation with students.

The give-and-take in these one-hour sessions exposes students to details about a variety of fields, to opportunities they didn’t know existed and to the expectations of employers.

The sessions are held at the Hillside Campus Boardroom, and free and open to current Art Center students.

Art Matters: Julie Deamer Speaks Tuesday

Julie Deamer will be on campus Tuesday to discuss how artists meaningfully contribute to communities and cultures in a global context as well as how they create civic artwork as sites for public discourse and expression. She’ll also share her thoughts on the role of art in response to social and environmental urgency.

Deamer has a history of creating and guiding successful art venues supporting contemporary artists. In 1995, she founded an exhibition space in San Francisco called Four Walls. Serving as director for five years, she presented enterprising projects by many successful artists exhibiting today. In 2004, Julie founded Outpost for Contemporary Art, a nonprofit residency and exchange program in Los Angeles that promotes cross-cultural exchange by developing international artistic projects that stimulate social interaction between people. She is also executive director of Harpo Foundation, established in 2006 to support under-recognized artists.

The event is free and open to the public.

Business Dialogue Series June 1

Art Center’s Business Dialogue Series brings industry professionals to campus to share their personal career paths, showcase their studios and projects and, most importantly, answer student questions. The series is presented by the College’s Office of Career Development. All majors and term levels are invited to attend and join the dialogue.

Turner Duckworth, an award-winning design consultancy with studios in San Francisco and London, will come to campus as part of the series next Tuesday, June 1. Turner Duckworth maintain a constant collaboration between both of their studios, and designers swap places for month-long exchanges. This unique collaboration provides clients with a broader design perspective than they would find with other design agencies.
