Summer 2014 has yielded a bounty of freshly produced works, events and ideas by Art Center alumni. And look for future editions of this dispatch to be equally flush, given July’s bumper crop of kickstarter campaigns. Read on to learn more…and get in on the fun(ding).

News

Agustin Garza (BFA 81 GRPK) was presented by the Pacific Design Center with the 2014 Stars of Design Award for Graphic Design. Pacific Design Center.

Jennifer Steinkamp’s (MFA 91 GART) public art piece, “Murmuration,” displayed in the entryway of the Gov. George Deukmejian Courthouse in Long Beach, was selected for an award sponsored by Americans for the Arts. Los Angeles Times.

Neeti Kailas (MS 2013 GIDP) was selected for a 2014 Rolex Award for Enterprise for her non-invasive, portable diagnostic device to detect hearing loss among newborns in India. National Geographic.

The designs of Chris Chung Kyo Lee (BS 13 TRAN) for BMW were highlighted on Ecomento. Ecomento.

Anne Hars (MFA 04 GART) interviewed architect and Southern California Institute for Architecture Co-Founder Glen Small for The Nomadic Journal. The Nomadic Journal.

Steve Vaughan (BFA 84 ADVT) was interviewed about his hot rod and fine art hybrid, ArtRod #001. JCOnline.

Malcolm Liepke (BFA 75 ILLU) was highlighted in an article on Star Tribune. Star Tribune.

The art and animation of Floyd Norman (ILLU), ranging from Disney to ‘Fat Albert,’ was featured on KPCC’s Off-Ramp blog. 89.3 KPCC.

“Talking Heads,” an exhibition by Matthew Rolston (BFA 78 PHOT) at Diane Rosenstein Fine Art, was reviewed by Zocalo Public Square. Zocalo Public Square.

Tasha Kusama (BFA 08 ILLU) was featured in an article about her work as Creative New Leader’s Creative Director. The Record.

Mike Megrabyan (BS 13 TRAN) was interviewed by Women’s Wear Daily about Palette Studio: the design tools brand he co-launched. Women’s Wear Daily.

Exhibitions

James Drake (BFA 69 FINE) is featured in a solo exhibition, ”Anatomy of Drawing and Space (Brain Trash),” at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. July 10– September 21.

Tiffany Trenda (BFA 02 FINE) performed at Code, Canvas, Chow Pop-up at The McLoughlin Gallery in San Francisco. Code Canvas Chow Pop-Up. July 23– 24.

Joey Spiotto (BFA 02 ILLU) is featured in a solo exhibition titled, “Storytime,” at Gallery1988: East in Los Angeles. Gallery1988. August 1–16.

James Griffith (MFA 82 GART) is included in a group exhibition, “Monochromart,” at LAUNCH Gallery in Los Angeles. LAUNCH LA. August 2– 30.

Rick Shaefer (PHOT) will be featured in an exhibition at Fairfield University’s Bellarmine Museum of Art titled, “Rick Shaefer: Rendering Nature.” Bellarmine Museum of Art. September 18– December 19.

Crowdfunding

Victor Cass (BFA 89 ILLU) is crowdfunding his participation in 2014 NAMIWalks Los Angeles County. NAMIWalks.

Ali Sakhapour (BFA 13 ILLU) is crowdsourcing funds for his simulation based game surrounding reality and dreams, ‘Wake the Dreamer.’ Kickstarter.

Francis Pollara (BFA 10 FILM) is crowdfunding “Mythical Creatures,” a film he co-produced by artist Gary Baseman and filmmaker David Charles uncovering the Holocaust experiences of Baseman’s parents, and re-imagining their heroic stories through an inspiring, fantastical, heart-wrenching odyssey. Kickstarter.

Frank Nichols (BFA 80 GRPK) is crowdsourcing funds for Yearstick 2015: a calendar presenting an entire year in a timeline format featuring months, days, US holidays, and moon phases. Kickstarter.

ART CENTER ALUMNI AWARDS 2014

Eight years ago we premiered the Art Center Alumni Awards, an annual recognition bestowed by the college and the office of Alumni Relations, with input from the internal Art Center community and global alumni community.

The Alumni Awards provide Art Center an opportunity to publicly recognize the talent, service and design influence of our alumni. The awards will be presented at the Fall 2014 Graduation ceremony on December 13th at 4pm.

Please send your nominations to the Alumni Relations office at alumni@artcenter.edu by October 1, 2014.

Lifetime Achievement Alumni Award - Recognizing a lifetime of professional and/or creative achievement

Outstanding Service Alumni Award - Recognizing significant service to Art Center or realized humanitarian design impact

Young Alumni Innovator Award - Recognizing a notable professional or creative innovation, bestowed on a recent alumnus of the past 10 years
