Art Center’s enterprising diaspora has been making a creative impact far and wide during August and September. Here’s a primer of the past two months’ worth of alumni accolades and accomplishments.

News

John Alvin’s (BFA 71 ILLU) iconic movie posters have been published in a new collection by Titan Books: The Art of John Alvin

Adele Bass (MFA 01 NEWM), Bruce Claypool (BFA 76 GRPK) and Craig Elliot (BFA 94 ILLU) were among the top fifteen noteworthy art professors in Los Angeles by the Art Career Project. The Art Career Project

Harald Belker (BS 90 TRAN) was interviewed by Fast Company in the My Creative Life series. Fast Company

Stefan Bucher (BFA 96 ADVT) created an animated music video for the musician Wesley Stace. Goodbye Jane

Jon Deshler (BFA 86 PHOT) is hosting the third annual Silverton Sidewalk Shindig in Silverton Oregon. Silverton Sidewalk Shindig October 4.

Rafael Esquer (BFA 96 GRPK), founder of Alfafa Studio, was interviewed by designboom.com about his work and creative process. designboom.com

Jason Hernandez (BFA 07 ILLU) was profiled in an article in the Huffington Post. Huffington Post

Tina Park (MFA 09 GMDP) was awarded a PPL fellowship, part of the Chancellor’s Challenge that is funded by the NYC Department of Education. Public Policy Lab

Josh Paul (BFA 97 PHOT) founded a new magazine focusing on Formula 1 races called Lollipop.  The magazine recently received a Type Director’s Club Award, Two SPD Awards and a Communication Arts Award. Lollipop

Christopher Marion Thomas (BFA 12 ILLU) is now selling Exhortation, a book on painting and religion, on amazon.com. amazon.com

Exhibitions

Doug Aitken (BFA 91 ILLU) is exhibiting his new work in a show entitled Still Life at Regen Projects in Los Angeles: September 6— October 11.

L.C. Armstrong (BFA 82 ILLU) is exhibiting her recent paintings at Marlborough Gallery in New York.  Marlborough Gallery September 16 – October 18.

Milka Broukhim (MFA 99 GMDP) was part of Local / Not Local: Arabic and Iranian Typography Made in California, a group exhibition at the Levantine Cultural Center. Local Not Local June 26 – August 28.

Andrew Cameron (MFA 14 GART) and Emilie Halpern (MFA 02 GART) had a joint exhibition, Standard Candles, at Samuel Freeman Gallery in Los Angeles. Samuel Freeman July 19 – August 23.

Cindy Jackson (FINE) had a solo show, (Not Quite) Salvation, at Los Angeles Art Association. Los Angeles Art Association  September 6 – October 3.

Tarmar Levine (BFA 05 PHOT) will be showing a series of recent photographs and videos, You Should Smile More, at the Lois Lambert Gallery.  Lois Lambert Gallery November 15 – January 4.

Syd Mead (BS 59 TRAN) is showing a selection of his work at the Rebecca Randall Bryan Gallery at the Coastal Carolina University.  Syd Mead Progressions August 18 – October 18.

Rebeca Méndez  (BFA 84 GRPK / MFA 96 NEWM) shared news and documentation of her recent and upcoming installations and exhibitions on her website. Rebeca Méndez

Cleon Peterson’s (BFA 04 GRPK) work was featured on the cover of the October edition of Juxtapoz Magazine. Juxtapoz

Christopher Russell (MFA 04 GART) exhibited a series of altered photographs at Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Oregon. Elizabeth Leach September 4 – 27.

Teri Sandison (BFA 79 PHOT) hosted an open studio to show her recent photographic work. Teri Sandison  September 20 – 21 and September 27 – 28.

The courtroom sketches of Richard Tomlinson (BFA 71 PHOT) were shown at the Stedman gallery at Rutgers-Camden Center for the Arts. Camden Collects July 7 – September 18.

Nina Waisman (BFA 04 FINE) developed an interactive installation through a series of workshops that was shown at Casa Vecina in Mexico City. Nina Waisman August 9 – 30.  Nina also presented a new collaborative installation at the LAXART Gala at Greystone. LAXART Gala at Greystone September 27.

Crowdfunding

Vizal Samreth (PROD) is crowdfunding a Hawaiian shirt with a pattern of flowers representing more than 200 countries in the world to promote world peace and travel. Kickstarter
