ArtCenter student projects snag top honors in the Core77 Design Awards

Guerewol Festival 2019 | Kenneth Kuh

Guerewol Festival 2019 | Kenneth Kuh

It was a good year for ArtCenter students in the Core77 Design Awards. They took top student honors in five separate categories and won awards in nine of the 18 total categories. One student project, i’mnot - Yamaha music instruments for non-musicians, won top honors in two separate categories while one student, Kenneth Kuh, had two projects recognized in the same category, with one winning and another receiving student notable recognition. Another project, ShineLA, received student notable recognition in two different categories. Five ArtCenter students were runners up in three separate categories and fourteen student projects were given notable awards.

ArtCenter came two short of sweeping the student awards in both the Packaging and Visual Communication categories.

Recognizing excellence in all areas of design enterprise, the Core77 Design Awards annually celebrates the richness of the design profession as well as the insight and perseverance of its practitioners. Now in its ninth year, the Awards program remains dedicated to excellence and inclusivity, offering both students and professionals the opportunity to promote their best work on a global scale across 18 distinct design disciplines.

The winning entries include i’mnot - Yamaha music instruments for non-musicians, by Peggy (Minguan) Li, that is an open-ended musical instrument and subscription service for non-musicians to experiment with sound. The i’mnot set, which won top student honors in both the Consumer Technology and Sports and Recreation categories, includes a DJ mixer, a theremin, a piano, a violin, a water phone, a xylophone and a Chinese erhu.

Kenneth Kuh’s rebrand for Guerewol Festival 2019, an annual courtship ritual competition among the Wodaabe Fula people of Niger, won top honors in the Visual Communication category. The visual identity is designed to create a more unified and immersive experience for the festival, as well as to allow the world to have a glimpse of the unique Wodaabe culture. Kuh’s Built( )Unbuilt project, an architectural exhibition catalog dedicated to our dystopian past and utopian tomorrow, received student notable recognition in the Visual Communication category.

ALFRED: Walker for the seniors of 2030; it follows you, designed by Devanshi Mehra was named top student entry in the Strategy and Research category. Mehra designed Alfred for Baby Boomers, who all will reach the retirement age of 65 in 2030. Noting that Boomers have learned to appreciate the convenience of technology and connected objects, Alfred takes advantage of modern technology to improve on current walkers and rollators that do not help users with stair climbing and are usually too for seniors to carry. Alfred moves autonomously next to the user and also serves as a stair climbing device.

Sophia Rowland’s Pairish— Food Waste Intervention, was selected as overall student winner of the Packaging category. Parish is an ingredient management app that is paired with pickling and smoothie making mixes designed to allow consumers to take control of their eco-footprint and reinvent their otherwise unloved leftover fruits and veggies into exciting new products.

Congratulations to everyone who brought home awards.
