Designmatters Project Creates Solar Water Distiller

Adjunct professor Tony Luna writes on the Designmatters blog about the Agua Pura project, which tackled the problem of finding clean water in Guatemala.

The project arose from a joint class, Product Design for the Developing World, participated in by students from Art Center, Caltech and Universidad Rafael Landivar in Guatemala. The goal was to create useful products for populations that make less than two dollars a day.

Luna explains: “What transpired over approximately the next ten months was truly amazing as our four students, together with their Landivar University counterparts, took the most basic low-tech concepts, built prototypes, did field studies and tests, and refined the products. Most importantly, they learned from each other.”

“Young Talent” David Smith Participates in 2010 French Cultural Exchange Program

Now in its fourth year, the innovative and educational art project “Jeunes Talents” (“Young Talents”) has selected eight young art and photography students from five major U.S. colleges and universities to document their experience of modern French life. As part of the Jeunes Talents program, Art Center Photography and Imaging student David Smith will be traveling to Arles, Provence from October 9-19, 2009.

To broaden the scope and impact of the project, eminent photography curator Tim Wride will supervise the students and their work. He will also curate three exhibitions of the students’ work, starting with a Los Angeles show that will take place March 31 to April 14, 2010.

Art Center is proud to have participated in the exchange program since its inception. To view the results of previous editions of Jeunes Talents visit franceguide.com/jeunestalents or the Jeunes Talents page on Facebook.

The Future of Moon Rovers is Here

How’s this for cool: Comogy.com has some photos of a Moonstream rover as conceptualized by Transportation Design student Anthony Sims. Modeled after working NASA designs, Anthony based the rover on forms found in nature, such as turtles and whales.

Pasadena Symphony All Ears When It Comes to ACCD Students

The Pasadena Symphony and Pops just launched a quirky new marketing campaign, courtesy of The Agency, Art Center’s student-staffed pro bono advertising agency that works with real clients.

The star of the new campaign? A giant fiberglass ear.

Made out of surfboard material, the ear stands three feet tall and appears to be a big fan of the symphony (and a great date).

The L.A. Times blogs that Art Center students including Connie Wong, who fabricated the ear, are exploring “how to make the ear more durable”—so that it can begin making personal appearances, of course.

Check out the video after the jump.

The Online Gallery is Live!

Have you seen our new gallery of student work?

It’s one of several exciting new features on the site. Sort work by discipline, then click on an image to see it larger and to find out more information on the piece. It’s a popularity contest of sorts — the more clicks a piece gets, the larger it appears in the gallery. Be sure to check it out!
