Weren’t able to make it to last month’s From Data to Discovery, the one-day symposium in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium on the emerging science of big data visualization?

Well, it’s time to turn that smile upside down, because videos of every presentation that took place that day are now available for viewing on a playlist on Caltech’s YouTube channel.

The symposium, which was co-hosted by Art Center, Caltech and NASA JPL, attracted some of the biggest leaders in the field from across the nation. Speakers included: Fernanda Viégas and Martin Wattenberg from Google’s “Big Picture” visualization research group; Jer Thorp, an artist and co-founder of The Office for Creative Research; Golan Levin, an artist and director of The Frank Ratchye STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University; and Eric Rodenbeck, founder of design firm Stamen.

The event was organized by Dr. Scott Davidoff, manager of the Human Interfaces Group at NASA JPL, Maggie Hendrie, chair of the Interaction Design department at Art Center, and Hillary Mushkin, a visiting professor of Art and Design at Caltech, with the goal, as Mushkin stated, of beginning “a new collective conversation and new perspective on data and visualizing data in new ways.”
