Save the Date: Forward Motion

A convergence of circumstances—energy security, climate change, air quality concerns—have led to a rapid push toward sustainable transportation. California and Québec have led the charge, researching and proposing solutions from their respective corners of North America.

These solutions and ideas will be presented at Forward Motion: Advancing Mobility in California & Québec.

This half-day symposium, organized by Art Center College of Design and the Québec Delegation in Los Angeles and in partnership with the Université de Montréal, will examine the impact on vehicle and infrastructure design in light of the roadmaps laid out by each particular region.

Expert panelists will compare and contrast Québec and California’s initiatives for the promotion of electric vehicles and public transit, and examine the new technologies and advanced materials that are rapidly driving North America forward.

Save the date today for this one-of-a-kind event. We’ll bring you more information as it becomes available, so stay tuned.

Postcards from Switzerland

Art Center returned to Europe for a reunion of alumni of our former Vevey campus June 3 and 4 in Vevey, Switzerland.

Some 300 guests enjoyed events including a reception, conference and party. President Lorne Buchman was on hand to share the College’s new strategic plan with the group as well.

“It was an awesome weekend,” says alumnus Marc Henry of Geneva, Switzerland. “What made this special was seeing friends that I had not seen since leaving Art Center.”

“Having this connection with everyone, and with one’s own past, is important,” says alum Jonas Blanking, managing and creative director of Sweden’s Boblbee. “It was such a great time.”

Cyberpunk vs. Rock Critic

Retromania. Gothic high-tech. Favela chic. Steampunk. Collective intelligence. Revival cults. Frankenstein mash-ups. Hauntology. The shock of the old: past, present and future in the first decade of the 21st-first century.

Thursday night, Art Center’s “Visionary in Residence” Bruce Sterling plays host to music critic and blogger Simon Reynolds, author of Energy Flash and Bring the Noise. The evening’s goal: to confront the implications of Simon’s latest book, Retromania: Pop Culture’s Addiction to Its Own Past.

Project Kicks Off with LAYAR DAY L.A.

Layar is sponsoring a project at Art Center this upcoming Summer Term, which kicks off with a symposium open to all.

LAYAR DAY L.A. will be Friday, May 20, and will include a workshop and symposium at Hillside Campus. LAYAR DAY L.A. will be a full day of hacking space and time with augmented reality. Join us as we seek inspiration from visionary thinkers and street-level artists—and help Layar make some cool AR in the process.

Meet the Layar team at 10:45 am at the Geffen Contemporary for an informal visit to the Art in the Streets exhibition of street art. MOCA opens at 11 a.m., and admission is $10 at the door.

At 1:30 p.m., the program moves to Art Center, where artist Sander Veenhof and Layar’s Gene Becker will lead a hands-on workshop teaching how to make augmented reality experiences on the Layar platform. Street art, public AR art exhibitions and historical layers will be used as examples of hacking space and time.

Following the workshop at 3 p.m., there will be a symposium featuring some of the world’s most visionary and creative minds in augmented reality. The incredible lineup of speakers includes noted author and former Art Center visionary-in-residence Bruce Sterling, Layar co-founder Maarten Lens-FitzGerald, Scott Fisher of USC’s School of Cinematic Arts and Dutch artist Sander Veenhof.

The symposium and workshop are free but space is limited, so reserve your spot at both today!

Syd Mead: “The Future Starts Right Now”

Legendary visual futurist and Art Center alumnus Syd Mead stopped by Art Center’s Ahmanson Auditorium last week as part of the Design Studio Press Spring Lecture Series.

Syd Mead signing "Sentury II."

The always entertaining Mead delivered a presentation to a packed house whose attendees included The Lord of the Rings visual effects director Paul Lasaine, Megamind concept artist Samuel Michlap and Tron: Legacy vehicle designer Daniel Simon.

Mead’s lecture traversed the history of the automobile (“My total contribution to Americana automobilia is the taillight of the Ford Falcoln Futura.”), the future of transportation (“Antigravity is the answer for designers who don’t like to draw wheels.”) and his favorite color (“Cherenkov radiation blue, a fascinating optical phenomenon.”).

He also touched on Blade Runner, his early work for Ford and U.S. Steel, his latest book Sentury II and why the future is so difficult to predict.

Here are some highlights from his presentation.

On creative control:

The idea of controlling your creative idea right to the final format? That will never happen. Or rarely. Your ideas will go through a series of committees, compromises and pummels every single time.

On doing things by hand:

I learned how to hand-letter at Art Center, and that was very good training for drawing perfect ellipses. I still use gouache, which is putting paint on cardboard with animal hairs at the end of a stick. I know that’s not very romantic, but it works. All of today’s rendering software and code is made deliberately to mimic the hand-drawn technique.
