The Image Gets Ready for Its Close-up: Art Center’s Imaging DNA Conference

Sure, Imaging DNA might sound like a new song from the Stanford biology rappers, but it’s actually an upcoming two-day conference (July 10–11) that Art Center, in association with NMC Partners, has organized to gather leaders and innovators in imaging, technology, media and education. The goal of the gathering? To immerse attendees in the ideas, discussion and debate surrounding all things image – their production, display, licensing and, in general, their usage.

“Imaging DNA is poised to be the crossroads for artists, educators, photographers and futurists, and therefore a perfect fit for Art Center,” said Dennis Keeley, chair of Art Center’s Photography and Imaging Department, who will moderate the two-day event. “The way the world captures, enhances and distributes photographs is continually transformed by technology. In the Photography and Imaging Department at Art Center, we focus on what does not change: the essence of great photography.”

  • Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion!, a new game for iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone, pits players against an evil company planning to ruin gaming with HD graphics. Illustration alum and band member Mike Shinoda designed avatars for each of his bandmates and oversaw the new app’s writing, story and gameplay. Wired Game Life

Es Tiempo Wins I.D. Award

Great news: Es Tiempo, a cervical cancer awareness campaign which resulted from a Designmatters transdisciplinary studio has won Best of Category in the Student Division of I.D.’s 2010 Annual Design Review. The project was among more than 400 entries.

The project, a collaboration between Designmatters, USC’s Keck School of Medicine and USC’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, took place last summer and was led by the College’s Advertising Department, including lead faculty Elena Salij and Maria Moon. Es Tiempo is a broad-based communications and outreach campaign encouraging Latinas to seek out early cervical cancer screening.

A warm congratulations to the student team behind Es Tiempo: Phillip An (Illustration), Mark Brinn (Graphic Design), Chris Lack (Graphic Design), Tracy Hung (Graphic Design), Haelee Kang (Graphic Design), Lucia Loiso (Photography and Imaging) and Camille Ontiveros (Fine Art).

Jeunes Talents 2010 Opens in WeHo

A group show featuring photographs of contemporary French life by American art school students premieres at Louis Stern Fine Arts in West Hollywood this week before moving to galleries in New Orleans and New York.

Jeunes Talents 2010, French Impressions: New Photographic Perspectives was conceived in the spirit of photographer Robert Frank. Eight American art students, including Art Center Photography and Imaging student David Holden Smith, were sent to France to capture the essence of French life and culture with fresh sensibilities, unsullied eyes and new perspectives. The cities of Aix-en-Provence, Arles (where Smith stayed), Marseille and Toulon were among the cities hosting photographers for 10 days.

Meet Kayla Varley

We met Photography and Imaging student Kayla Varley through Facebook—she was our 500th fan! Kayla is finishing up her first term at the College.

“I felt a special energy here from the minute I stepped on campus,” says Kayla. “I knew that I would be able succeed here.”

Photography Seminar Tonight

Don’t miss tonight’s seminar, Transitions: Strategies for the Young Working Photographers, moderated by Photo District News Editor Holly Hughes.

Photographers included in the 2010 PDN’s 30 highlighting top new talent will share their perspectives on getting started in the photography industry. The photographers will share career advice and discuss how they got to where they are today, including how they got their first jobs and their first promotional efforts. This seminar is a must for any photographers beginning their careers.

Visual Acoustics Screening Sunday

Grassroots think tank One Community, in association with the Julius Shulman Institute at Woodbury University, will present a screening of the film Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman at Hillside Campus Sunday. The documentary will be followed by a moderated discussion—Does Architecture Create Great Communities or Do Communities Create Great Architecture?—featuring architectural historian Barbara Lamprecht and artist Michael Stern.

Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, the film explores the monumental career of architectural photographer Shulman, who died last year at the age of 99. Shulman combined the organic with the synthetic, capturing the essence of urban design and nature in his photographs.
