Young Love: Honoring Doyald Young’s Legacy

Doyald Young was one of Art Center’s toughest—but most beloved—instructors, one the greatest letterform designers of all time, and a cherished friend and mentor to many.

Celebrate his life and legacy with us this Sunday, April 10, at Young Love, a day of workshops held in his honor and an evening of memories and stories.

To celebrate Young’s work, prominent designers and Art Center instructors will help you learn to draw beautiful curves and letterforms. Join Jill Belle, Stefan G. Bucher, Nils Lindstrom, Ramone Munoz, Chesley Nassaney and Bumsuk Lim for a series of hands-on workshops creating luscious curves in homage to Young. Workshops will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and held in the cafeteria and nearby classrooms. Visit www.35k.com/younglove/workshops.gif for updates to the workshop schedule later in the week.

Then, in the evening, join friends and colleagues of Young for an exhibition of the day’s work and a reception from 5 to 6 p.m. Following the reception will be a screening of the new documentary, Doyald Young, Type Designer directed by Scott Erickson and produced by Lynda.com. Following the documentary, Young’s friends and colleagues will share a few of their favorite memories of this great man.

ACSG Leads Japan Relief Effort

Art Center’s Student Government is teaming up with the College to raise $5,000 in donations for the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Japan is still in desperate need of funds to revitalize their coastal communities after last month’s earthquake and tsunami. Donations will be accepted through April 20.

Art Center has maintained a close relationship with Japan dating back to the 1950s when the first design students sponsored by JETRO came to study at the College. In recent years, students from Tama Art University and Art Center have collaborated on several projects, including a study on earthquake safety, in an effort to design more effective approaches to education, preparedness and recovery. Please help us send desperately needed aid to Japan.

Licensing Your Ideas: DOT Entrepreneurial Event

Join us on April 7 for an evening panel discussing licensing and Intellectual Property (IP). Learn more about IP, how it applies to designers and creatives, and how to engage with major manufacturers.

Speakers include:

  • Warren Tuttle: Inventor, LifeTime Brands product scout and UIA president
    Warren Tuttle was the person behind the scenes helping to orchestrate the overnight success of television direct response mega-hit Smart Spin. Teaming with a Boston-based inventor, Tuttle selected an explosive path to market. With almost 10 million units sold, Smart Spin continues to be prominently featured at major retailers throughout the country. Currently, Tuttle focuses on external product development for Lifetime Brands of Garden City, New York, the world’s largest manufacturer of kitchen utensils and a major supplier of food prep and tabletop products to America’s major retailers. Lifetime Brands manufactures and markets over 30,000 products under multiple brand names including Farberware, Kitchen Aid, Cuisinart, Pedrini, Mikasa, Towle and Pfaltzgra.
  • Dario Antonioni: Founder, Orange22 Design Lab LLC and Art Center alumnus
    Dario Antonioni has independently designed retail experiences, products and interior architecture for clients worldwide. He holds more than 12 design and utility patents and is creator of the successful GRID-IT! organization system. Antonioni’s work has been featured on TV and in books and periodicals around the world. Dario has won awards from LG Electronics, I.D. Magazine, and selected by Surface Magazine for their T.A.G. Team Event, held in Milan, Italy and NYC 2003, spotlighting emerging talent within the United States. His clients include Aveda, Ducati, DMC, Edward Norton, Flight 001, Fred Segal, Gensler, Light Group, Pepsi, Hard Rock, Haworth, Henry Bendel, Ralph Lauren, Starbucks and Sony.
  • Michelle Katz: IP attorney
    Michelle Katz is a seasoned attorney specializing in Intellectual Property, contracts, promotions and licensing matters. Her capabilities include developing, drafting, negotiating infrastructure, service and licensing contracts; identifying, structuring and negotiating strategic partnerships; structuring and implementing sweepstakes, contests and promotions in all media; developing and implementing IP Strategy: copyright, trademark, privacy and online policies. She is a faculty member at Art Center and California College of the Arts, and regularly lectures at colleges and organizations for creative professionals. She teaches law for artists and designers, as well as business law and negotiations.

The event is open to all Art Center students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Tonight: The Visual Language of Herbert Matter

Don’t miss tonight’s screening of The Visual Language of Herbert Matter at Hillside Campus.

Herbert Matter was a mid-century modern designer, photographer and filmmaker.

Originally from Switzerland, he moved to New York in 1935 and worked with such legends as Alexey Brodovitch, Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollock and Charles and Ray Eames. This documentary looks at Matter’s life and work.

Art Center and Corbis Launch Always On

The College has launched a great new project with Corbis Images—Always On: Talks By Leaders in Art and Design. This new initiative makes videos of presentations and panel discussions by experts in art and design available for free to anyone, anywhere, anytime at our new Always On website. Produced by Art Center and supported by Corbis, Always On aims to support the creative community in personal and professional development by creating a global platform for art and design leaders to share insights and discuss trends.

Throughout 2011, Corbis is contributing one dollar to the initiative for each order customers make online at corbisimages.com, with funds going to help Art Center produce more video presentations. With the worlds of art and design changing at the speed of light in the digital era, the goal of Always On is to provide the creative community with 24/7/365 online access to the latest perspectives from luminaries in art and design.

The partnership between Art Center and Corbis Images was initiated by legendary designer Kit Hinrichs, an Art Center alumnus and member of the College’s Board of Trustees. As principal of the design firm Studio Hinrichs, he worked with Corbis Images on its 24/7/365 digital and print calendar campaign to showcase the exceptional images in the Corbis Images collection.

As Hinrichs reviewed Corbis Images’ library of images—including photography, fine art, illustration and film—he saw an immediate connection with Art Center, which offers majors in these fields as well as many other creative disciplines. Building on the theme developed with Corbis Images, AlwaysOn seeks to provide the creative community with 24/7/365 online access to the latest perspectives in art and design as shared by the College’s renowned faculty and guest speakers.

Always On will feature both renowned members of Art Center’s faculty and guest speakers from around the world. The first video features associate professor Heidrun Mumper-Drumm, Art Center’s director of sustainability initiatives, who introduces key aspects of Comprehensive Design in a fun and engaging exercise.

Upcoming speakers include designer Fiona Raby of Dunne + Raby, visionary sci-fi author Bruce Sterling, media artist Aaron Koblin, visual strategist Dan Goods, futures researcher Jason Tester, architecture blogger Geoff Manaugh, landscape artist Andrew Hem and fine artist Sarah Awad. They will discuss topics that address current and future trends in art and design, such as the practice of making things up in a rapidly changing world; the use of communication design across space, time and behavior; and establishing an original voice and point of view as an illustrator.

Celebrating Art Center’s Many Cultures

Last week marked the annual Celebration of Cultures, organized and presented by the Center for the Student Experience (CSE). A week’s worth of fun and activities are organized to celebrate the dynamic cultural diversity of Art the campus community.

The events included a Cultural Desserts event presenting a variety of delicious deserts from across the globe; an International Cheese Tasting class taught by the Cheese Store of Pasadena; a travel slideshow featuring travel images from students, faculty and staff; the Chill Out Cart, which passed out frozen treats across campus; a Global Village featuring food, games and music from around the world; and a Food Club Outing to Wat Dong Moon in Silver Lake.

Designmatters Presentation at TOMS

Designmatters will host an engaging program at the TOMS Give Shop and Gallery in Los Angeles on Thursday, March 31. The presentation will feature a short lecture and panel of colleagues and star students to discuss the ongoing exploration of art and design as a positive force in society.

Special Documentary Screening: Allen Daviau

Don’t miss a special screening and Q&A session this afternoon with
 British documentarian John Henderson about his work-in-progress documentary based on Art Center faculty member
 Allen Daviau.

E.T., Daviau

Henderson has been creating a series of in-depth documentaries about the world’s great cinematographers, and the first film in the series is about famed cinematographer and Art Center instructor Daviau.

Allen’s first feature film was E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, earning the first of five Oscar nominations and launching his career as one of the industry’s leading cinematographers. Since then, he has worked on such notable films as The Color Purple, Falcon and the Showman, Empire of the Sun, Avalon, Bugsy, Congon and Van Helsing. He has been nominated for three American Society of Cinematographers Awards, winning twice, and has received the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award. Stop by and meet the legendary cinematographers who will be attending the screening, including Vilmos Zsigmond, Haskell Wexler and Owen Roizman. The event is open to all Art Center students, alumni, faculty and staff.

Graphic Design Student Exhibits Photos of Sudan

Graphic Design student Tyler Paulson currently has an exhibition of photographs on display at the South Campus Gallery.

Teed ["in waiting"]: Portraits of South Sudan highlights portraits and images captured while Paulson served local missionaries in the region from 2008 and 2010.

“Taken after a ceasefire, these portraits capture a people experiencing their first taste of peace in decades while awaiting the hope of becoming a new nation,” Paulson says. “ I met a people of great beauty, but with deep scars—and I sought out to know and serve them, and to share their story.”

The exhibition is the culmination of a Designmatters-facilitated independent study led by faculty member Gloria Kondrup.

The exhibit is on display through April 1, with an artist reception held on Saturday, March 26 at 6 p.m.
