February 2015 Art Center alumni notes
It’s been a fruitful awards season—and not just for the creative team behind Birdman. Art Center alums have amassed an impressive array of accolades, from the Caldecott Medal (the Oscars of children’s literature) to the Oscars themselves. So in lieu of glitzy after party, we’ve done the next (or perhaps next, next) best thing and compiled highlights from our alumni community’s recent accomplishments below. Enjoy!

Roman Vargas, Photography and Imaging – second round from Art Center College of Design on Myspace.
Shortly after the Spring 2014 term passed its halfway point, our participating students (Myspacers?) produced a new set of videos tracking their progress on the path toward creative completion.
Starting a project is never easy. And finishing it is, arguably, even harder. But let’s not underestimate the challenges involved in persisting through the obstacle course of roadblocks artists often face once they’re deep enough into a project that starting over isn’t an option, and the finish line isn’t yet in sight.
Filling in the Blank: Students Bringing TEDx to Campus
Orange will mix with red this summer when the student-driven TEDx Art Center College of Design conference takes over the Hillside Campus on Saturday, June 9 to explore the event’s theme: “Design a ________ for Social Impact.” The “blank” in that title is a call-to-action designed to inspire conference attendees to come up with their own idea for how to effect positive change in the world.
Also on hand to inspire attendees will be an impressive lineup of speakers, including Doug Powell, national president of AIGA and the individual spearheading that association’s Design for Good initiative; and Cameron Tonkinwise, chair of Design Thinking and Sustainability at Parsons The New School School for Design, whose current research is exploring design-enabled sharing of resources. And for something completely different, Art Center Product Design alumnus and KILLSPENCER founder Spencer Nikosey has been tapped to provide the day’s musical entertainment.

Get Your Group On: Spotlight on ACCD/AIGA
If you’re a graphic designer, you’ve heard of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).
A professional association for design founded in 1914, AIGA’s mission, according to its website, is “to advance designing as a special craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force.”
Not surprisingly, Art Center has a student group affiliated with the association—ACCD/AIGA. We recently caught up with the group’s president, seventh-term Graphic Design student Amelia Stier, to get the lowdown.
Young Honored at AIGA Gala
AIGA’s site has a great write-up on the medal winner, and Doyald has a wonderful essay on his five design mentors. Be sure to check them out.
Congrats, Doyald!
